pre-kids, gabe and i used to go on an annual camping trip with friends. camping in the sense that we stayed in a tent in the wilderness and sat around campfire. but by no means did we 'rough it' - it was a weekend of a whole lotta sitting, drinking, eating and gabbing.
this past weekend we took the kids on their first camping trip. they were excited, i was anxious that it might be more work than it was worth and that i wouldn't get my whole lotta sitting around doing nothing done. but it wasn't bad at all. we went with some friends, so the kids had other kids to play with and save for a few inevitable instances (when 4 kids under 7 are present) - the weekend was a success...and i got my requisite sitting and doing nothing done.
things i would do differently next time: 1) don't go to the USA on a long weekend - 3.5 hour border line up = not fun. 2) go camping earlier in the summer to avoid campfire bans - camping without being able to stare aimlessly into a campfire for hours on end and having everything you own smell like campfire at the the end of the trip - it just isn't the same.
